Lugu Lake to Lijiang Self-drive Time-lapse

with No Comments

Time-lapse of our self-drive journey from Lugu Lake (泸沽湖) to Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城). Yunnan Province (云南), China. During late Nov-2017.

On this China self-drive road-trip (read this to know how to get a Chinese driving license), we started from the heart of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. From Chengdu, we drove south towards Liangshan via the scenic Yaxi Expressway (G5). Before turning west onto S307 at Liangshan. S307 would link us directly into Lugu Lake, which sits on the border between Sichuan and Yunnan Province. The entire Chengdu-to-Lugu Lake journey is ~680km and took us slightly more than a day to cover.

After touring Lugu Lake, we headed towards Lijiang Old Town, along S307 followed by G348(S991). This leg of the journey took us half a day.

After exploring Lijiang for 3 days, we returned back to Chengdu via heading east towards Panzhihua before turning north onto G5 towards Chengdu. This return journey would take us ~15 hours of solid driving.

Our experience of Driving in China

China has been aggressively upgrading its roads and infrastructure in the past decade. As such, most (if not all) of the roads we’ve driven on for this trip is well-paved. And amenities are aplenty along the routes to serve travellers like us.

However, do note that Chinese drivers can be reckless and perform overtaking under dangerous conditions. As such, always practise defensive driving and never assume that the other party will follow traffic rules. Also ensure that you maintain strict lane discipline, while assuming that other driver/s will not.

Finally, Chinese roads are notorious for having an unusually high concentration of traffic/security cameras. Therefore, remember to follow all speed limits.
